A lyrical "sit-com"...

A Midsummer Night's Dream - "I.L. Caragiale" National University of Theatre and Film, Bucharest, Romania

The performance by the students from the Romanian University is innovative for various reasons. It was interesting for me how Shakespeare’s well-known play was re-interpreted in such a free manner, both in its portrayals and its dramaturgy. A lyrical, thought-provoking „sit-com”was created from the material, with strong performances (which can still be developed). It is interesting how the actors made these characters their own, and how they adapted them to themselves, while using various techniques which alienate the audience. The best acting work was done by the actor playing Oberon, for he had both practical and artistic tasks which are difficult to combine. His was a varied and thought-through performance, though every other actor played in an exciting, laid back but detailed way.
